In 2002 Special Operations Warrior Foundation, headquartered in Tampa, Florida, approached Buck Trott about a possible fund raiser for the foundation. They suggested a golf tournament, but our area already consisted of six tournaments per season.

Maryanne Vines had helped with an adventure race in Sapphire, NC the previous year. The chamber director put the idea to Buck and the race was hatched.

The new group knew nothing about launching an adventure race so the first year was all about learning from mistakes, recalculating, and moving on with experience.

The second year we had a better race and a new auction event. The success of both enabled us to send more scholarship dollars to the
Tampa organization.

Dates were changed to earlier in June to position our event within the local area calendar.

The golf tournament started in 2007. This made 3 events in a one week period and was proven to be a successful formula.

This is our Anniversary 10th year for the race. Our efforts have enabled us to send to SOWF $565,000 over that past 10 years.
